Exchanges and Loans

The Emory University Herbarium offers an active exchange and loan program, facilitating the sharing of plant specimens with institutions worldwide. This initiative supports global botanical research and fosters collaboration within the scientific community.

Exchanges

The Emory University Herbarium is seeking exchanges from other institutions. Geographically our order of preference is specimens from:

  1. Amazon basin
  2. tropical Africa
  3. Middle East
  4. Asia

Our greatest interest is in obtaining specimens of non-cultivated medicinal and wild food plants. We are also interested in plant of general historical economic botany importance.

Contact the Herbarium Director for interest in a one-time or ongoing exchange.

Loans

Loans of herbarium material will be approved for anyone doing scientific research at a recognized institution. Individuals desiring specimen loans should make arrangements to receive and return the loan through their local herbarium. Loans are typically made for a period of one year. Destructive sampling of small portions of material for DNA studies, SEM work, etc. generally will be allowed, although permission must first be requested for review on a case-by-case basis.

Contact the Herbarium Director for additional details regarding loans.
